Learning Path 1, Lesson 6: The Day You Designed Your Best Year

Welcome to Lesson 6 of The Purposeful Performer, and congrats on completing the Clarity Challenge (lessons 1-5).

Up to this point, we’ve been zooming out to look at the bigger picture—your performance last year, your career, your life, your ambitions. Now, it’s time to put these insights to practical use.

Today’s lesson is a dead-simple way to plan your best year ever by embracing our core principle: “Human first, professional second.”

A more purposeful way to plan the year ahead

The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.

STEPHEN COVEY

Today, we’ll explore how to intentionally design your year around the things that spark joy and create memories, and then work backwards to fill in the gaps for only the highly valuable work.

This will be a natural filter against the low-value activities and distractions that can creep in, erode your performance, and deliver mediocre results.

It's a double whammy: a happy human + a productive professional.

The exercise in today’s Mission will instantly upgrade your year and free you up to produce your best work ever.

Why does this matter?

99% of strategic sellers I first start coaching get annual planning wrong. They are "time blind" (something exacerbated for those with ADHD), which results in two unfortunate outcomes:

  1. Missing or barely hitting their number, while...

  2. Sacrificing the important events and people in their lives

To tackle the "time blindness" trap and enter the top 1%:

  • Build your personal calendar for the year first

  • Bring it to life with things that will create lasting memories

  • Use the open blocks on it to then fill in your professional work

When you prioritize “human first, professional second,” you're not giving up work for fun. Instead, you're designing your calendar purposefully to focus only on the most important tasks while also making time for what truly matters to you personally.

Below, I will walk you through how to do this in three simple steps, including a helpful tool and a guided plan (which you can unlock in the Mission). Heads up though—there are a few “must-haves” to ensure your annual calendar is complete.

Let’s dive in!

Never looked at my whole year in advance like this. Not sure the difference it's going to make at this time other than thinking/knowing about future dates that are both personal and for deep work. But I'm going to set aside any judgements and trust the process!

Might be a European thing, but I believe we have the "enjoy your life" events instilled in our culture already ;)

As an American who lived in Europe for a little while, yes I can attest and appreciate the life first<>work second attitude. Hopefully visualizing the entire year gives you some more interesting ways to harmonize this with strong performance.

Reading this lesson today in mid May and I'm smiling: it's a lovely coincidence that I stumbled upon Jesse's talk and his big a$$ calendar earlier this year and immediately ordered one after I heard him speak. Five months in, both my husband and I really enjoy having it up on the wall (he had no idea what it was initially and fell in love once we started using it). We use it to dream, plan and coordinate various family and individual events using the color stickers. Even as I navigate challenges in work in recent months (e.g. layoff & job searching), I know they don't define me as I have a full life and meaningful relationships that I intentionally take time to nurture. This giant calendar is a visual reminder of all of that. It's been a simple addition but somehow very clarifying and effective. Great to see you recommending it as part of this learning block, and I also highly recommend it!

You are getting the true essence of this lesson, the big annual calendar map as a tool, and ultimately what the mission is about—designing your calendar around your life first and then filling in the gaps with high-quality work.
